Quirky..........

It occurred to me today as I was scrubbing behind the toilet seat with a toothbrush (just one of the many joys of having a 7 year old with a none-too-accurate aim) that there are many bits of this house that exist for no apparent reason but mean a lot to all of us who live here.
For example in our bathroom we have this.........

Don't ask me why he's wearing a cycling hat but I think he suits it, don't you?
When we bought this house we loved the fact that one of the previous owners had cobbled together any old pieces of wood to box in pipes, create cupboards etc. This is one of his masterpieces.........

It covers water pipes running from the top floor of the house and sort of looks like a mantlepiece stuck on the wall for no apparent reason. I can't explain why we like it, I'm sure to some people it looks faintly ridiculous, but then, so is life!

This sits on the shelf on the top floor. Ian gave it to me for our first Valentines together and it's just so cute I had to frame it, needless to say nearly 12 years and 2 children down the line, Feb 14th isn't quite the same!

Jack's room yields all sorts of treasures..............

..................including shells, stones and bits of feathers stuck into white tack (don't ask me why?)

Hanging next to Kit's dressing table is a teddy that Jack made in Year 2 at school, aptly named "fat tummy" by his beloved sister, much to his disgust.

Finally, perched on the living room bookshelves is my little birdie. It took me ages to find a shape suitably bird-like for my Christmas decorations. Most of them looked strangely fishy. Finally I managed to come up with this one and they were one of my best sellers, so I'm rather fond of this little one.

So there you go, just a few of the weird and wonderful things to be found in this house, I'm sure a few more will pop up along the way. See you all soon..........

It is good to have a nose and poke around other peoples homes, I love the shelves, I think that is what makes a home all those nooks and crannies!

Oh I love all your bits and pieces...aren't other people's houses endlessly fascinating. I think the shelves to cover pipes is a really good idea and I want to see if it will work in our laundry room.

Hi Julia,
I love all the little bits and pieces around the house that don't particularly mean anything but to me I think it is what makes a house a home, especially when you have kids, I love some of the little things my boys collect and display in their rooms like, smooth round rocks, pretty feathers and many shells.
Cheers Linda
(P.S. Try putting a ping pong ball in the toilet it gives the boys something to aim at and the ball will spin if they hit it right and it is too light to be flushed down the toilet, it worked for my boys.)

Nooks and crannies are great, and quirky ones even better. What an ingenious idea to cover up old pipes, I can see why you love it!
