Do eleven broad beans constitute self sufficiency?..........

...............oh, and a few very small carrots tasting peculiarly soapy?

Now, I'm not known for my green fingers. Optimistically I planted some carrots, broad beans, rocket and had some tomatoes donated by a sympathetic friend. We've had the results of the beans, all eleven them and very delicious they were too. The rocket was gone after two salads and of course I forgot to sow any more seeds. The carrots are strange. The tomatoes are more hopeful, I'm quite proud of them. However, I don't think I'll be adding myself to the huge waiting list for a local allotment because a: I'm a realist and actually quite lazy, and b: I'm a crap gardener. But I tried...............

We did get a few apples from our little apple tree.................

..............and this little beauty has been the star of the garden this year, ie. it's still alive! Unfortunately we can't eat it.

Kit is showing the same gardening skills as her mother. This is her "remedy" for an ailing rose that I was trying to save. Firstly cut off all the remaining leaves, next behead the rest of the flowers in the garden (very few), oh and the odd tomato, and add. Water profusely and wait...............I'm not holding out much hope!

We've been slightly more successful in the baking department. Using the childrens toy mixer we made pancakes, lots of them. And they've all gone, yum, yum!

More later in the week.........................................

And just why do carrots taste soapy sometimes? I have always wondered about that.

Good for you, trying your hand at a veg patch. Those wee tomatoes look just the thing.

Ohhh... At least you gave it a try...
My Father In Law, is constantly looking after his vegetable patch.
It is a very time consumming "job" in his case "hobby", but, when you persevere the rewards are AMAZING!
That`s easy said, I suppose...
Coming from someone whose gardenning and baking skills are very limited!
Before I go...
Is it rainning a lot where you live, also!?
Maybe that`s what is making the carrots taste of soap...

Well done you on the veggies...our veggie patch is still in its idyllic imaginary stages...you know, the one where everything grows in abundance with very little labour and stuff only needs to be done when it's sunny :) (oh, and I send my rosy cheeked offspring out to pick things and they don't drop them 10 times or throw them at each other on the way back to the house)....hmmm :)
So we were impressed anyway and we liked Kits salvage attempt too...

I particularly like Kit's "save the flowers" attempt :-) We have quite a big garden and keep getting the urge to have a veggie garden but I am so not green fingered either so have avoided the shame of it so far LOL
I have been sticking to inside stuff its far to wet and chilly to be outside in our neck of the woods !!!!!!!!!!

So funny! Love Kit's gardening! But don't be disheartened about the veggie growing - just plant more next year!

P.S. I can never grow nice carrots so I don't bother anymore - but digging your own potatoes is one of the best things ever!

My garden has had to look after itself this year, I like the whole idea of having a veg patch and a beautiful cottage garden but when you have kiddies trampleing all over it it's hard work!
I have to say your toms and apples look pretty good well done!
Kit's remedy pot is super! Wish this rain would go away!
